How to choose a nursery in Umm Al Quwain: a parent’s checklist

Ten simple things to look for when you visit a nursery in UAQ, from class sizes and hygiene to settling-in and the questions to ask.

Choosing your child’s first nursery is a big step. Whether you live in Al Salma, Al Raas, Al Ramlah or near the corniche, the right nursery should feel like a second home. Here is a simple checklist to take with you when you visit.

1. Do the children look happy and busy?

Walk in and watch for a minute. Happy nurseries are a little noisy: children chatting, building, painting and moving around. Look for teachers down at the children’s level, talking and playing with them, not just watching.

2. How big are the classes?

Ask how many children are in each class and how many adults are with them. Babies and toddlers need far more adult attention than four-year-olds, so the numbers should change with age.

3. Is it clean and safe?

Check the toilets, nappy-changing area and kitchen. Ask about gate and door security, who can collect your child, and how staff handle illness. A nursery with a nurse or clinic on site can respond quickly if your child feels unwell.

4. Which curriculum do they follow?

Many UAE nurseries follow the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It is built around play and covers communication, physical development, emotional wellbeing, early reading and maths. Ask how the nursery tracks your child’s progress and how often you will hear about it. You can read more in our guide, What is the EYFS?.

5. Will my child hear Arabic and English?

In the UAE, growing up with two languages is a real gift. Ask how much of the day is in each language and whether Arabic is taught by native speakers.

6. What do the children eat?

Ask to see a sample menu. Find out how allergies are managed and whether you send food from home or the nursery provides meals.

7. How does settling-in work?

The best nurseries never rush. Ask how long the first sessions are and whether you can stay with your child at the start.

8. What are the timings?

Check opening and closing times against your work hours, and ask whether half-day and full-day options are available.

9. What is included in the fees?

Fees in Umm Al Quwain vary with your child’s age and the hours you choose. Ask exactly what is included, such as meals, uniforms, trips and transport, so you can compare fairly. Our guide to nursery fees in UAQ lists the right questions.

10. How does it feel?

Finally, trust your instincts. If the staff are warm, the rooms are cheerful and your child wants to stay and play, you have probably found the right place.
