Raising bilingual children in the UAE: English and Arabic from the start
Why learning English and Arabic together in the early years is good for your child, and easy ways to support both languages at home.

In the UAE, children hear many languages every day. Growing up with both English and Arabic gives them a head start at school and a strong link to the culture around them. Here is why it works so well when they start young.
Young brains love languages
From birth to five, children pick up the sounds and patterns of language faster than at any other time. A child who hears two languages early can learn both naturally, without “translating” in their head.
Will two languages confuse my child?
No. Some bilingual children mix words or take a little longer to start talking, but this is normal and quickly passes. Over time they learn which language to use with whom.
The benefits
- Stronger thinking skills. Switching between languages exercises attention and memory.
- An easier start at school. UAE schools teach Arabic, so a strong early foundation helps.
- Connection. Children can talk with grandparents, neighbours and friends from many backgrounds.
Simple ways to help at home
- Read every day, in whichever language feels natural to you.
- Sing songs and rhymes. Repetition and rhythm help words stick.
- Name things around you at the supermarket, in the car and at the park.
- Keep it fun. Praise every effort and never force your child to speak.
