8 gentle tips to help your child settle into nursery
Starting nursery can bring tears, for children and parents. These practical tips help your little one feel safe and happy in their first weeks.

The first weeks at nursery are a big change for the whole family. A few tears are completely normal, and most children settle in faster than their parents expect. These tips can make the start a little smoother.
1. Talk about nursery before it starts
Use simple, positive words: “At nursery you will play with toys and make friends, and then Mama or Baba will come back.” Picture books about starting nursery help too.
2. Visit together first
Visiting before the first day lets your child see the rooms, toys and teachers while you are right there. Familiar places feel safer.
3. Start with short days
Short first sessions that grow over a week or two let your child learn that you always come back.
4. Bring a comfort item
A favourite soft toy, blanket or a small family photo can be a big comfort in a new place.
5. Keep goodbyes short and sweet
Say a cheerful goodbye, tell your child when you will be back, and then leave. Sneaking out can make children more worried next time, and long goodbyes make it harder.
6. Stick to routines at home
Regular bedtimes and calm mornings help children cope with new things during the day.
7. Talk to the teachers
Tell them what comforts your child, their favourite songs, words they use and any worries. The more the teachers know, the faster they can help.
8. Be patient with yourself, too
It is normal to feel emotional. Ask the nursery to message you once your child has settled; most children stop crying within minutes of their parent leaving.
